Die Karpatenbirke ist ein Eiszeitrelikt auf besonders nährstoffarmen Böden, und die Rhön ist einer der heutigen Verbreitungsschwerpunkte dieser Art. Stone runs and carpathian birches at the Steinberg. Such accumulations of rocks have been shaped by the erosion of lava fields at a constant change of heat and frost during the ice ages. The Carpathian birch is a relic of the ice age on very nutrient-poor soils, and the Rhön is one of the main areas of this species' actual distribution range.
